MacWhisper
~300,000 copies sold, €59 Pro one-time, actively shipping (v12 in 2025)
Dutch indie developer who has built 20+ Mac apps solo, 7 featured on the App Store. Portfolio: MacWhisper, MacGPT, Vivid, Navi.
In January 2023, Dutch Mac developer Jordi Bruin wrapped a native SwiftUI interface around ggerganov's whisper.cpp — making OpenAI's Whisper usable on Mac without a terminal. He called the model code 'voodoo' and contributed the UI layer: drag-and-drop, export options, batch processing.
The Receipt
“Seems shady to me to charge for running larger free models you don't provide on hardware your users provide.”
“Most of the low level stuff is voodoo to me, but I was able to get a native macOS app up and running thanks to all your hard work!”

Total sales
~300,000 copies sold; €59 Pro one-time price
First-mover advantage: shipped within weeks of whisper.cpp making local inference viable — first polished Mac GUI before any serious competition
Posting to whisper.cpp GitHub discussion (#420) and openai/whisper GitHub: seeded organic discovery among the highest-intent users already seeking a GUI
One-time pricing (no subscription) against Otter.ai ($100+/year) — prominently positioned for Mac indie app buyers who resist recurring billing
Continuous visible shipping (v1 → v12 in 2 years): each release announcement on X reactivates the purchase funnel among existing users and their networks
Most of the low level stuff is voodoo to me, but I was able to get a native macOS app up and running thanks to all your hard work!
💡 What you can learn
- The open-source model wasn't the product.
- The drag-and-drop Mac app that required no terminal was the product.
- Bruin's critics confused 'free underlying technology' with 'free market.' 300,000 people paid for the UI layer.
Mac power-user press coverage: Om Malik, MacSparky, 9to5Mac drove sustained word-of-mouth in communities with high purchase intent
When they pushed back
When critics called charging for free models 'shady,' Bruin expanded MacWhisper Pro into a full transcription platform — diarization, AI prompting, batch processing, YouTube, Ollama — making the Pro case about features.
