Tana
$25M raised, 160K+ waitlist, pivoting to agentic meeting platform
Norwegian trio: Tarjei Vassbotn (CEO, ex-Google), Olav Kriken (COO), Grim Iversen (CAIO, ex-Google Wave). Palo Alto HQ.
Grim Iversen had pitched Tana's knowledge graph ideas internally at Google Wave in 2009 but they were never built. In 2021 he and Norwegian colleagues Tarjei Vassbotn and Olav Kriken founded Tana to realize the vision: a workspace where computers handle data movement so humans can focus on thinking.
The Receipt
“Yet another entry in the productivity tool sweepstakes.”
“With AI we can solve this, but only if we approach knowledge work in a fundamentally different way. Plugging AI into our current fragmented ecosystem will create an even bigger mess.”

Outcomes & Insights

February 2025
Funding / launch
$25M total raised ($11M seed + $14M Series A). Product Hunt #1 Product of the Year.
3-year invite-only beta: pent-up demand from PKM power users made the public launch inherently newsworthy — 160K waitlist without a public product
Power user evangelism: steep learning curve produced highly committed users who wrote public tutorials and YouTube walkthroughs, reducing Tana's support burden
Investor credibility signal: Lightspeed seed + Tola Series A + angels (Lars Rasmussen of Google Maps, Arash Ferdowsi of Dropbox) gave legitimacy to enterprise prospects
PKM Twitter/YouTube community: the 'tools for thought' niche is small but vocal — Forte Labs, Ness Labs, and Cortex Futura reviews drove organic discovery
With AI we can solve this, but only if we approach knowledge work in a fundamentally different way. Plugging AI into our current fragmented ecosystem will create an even bigger mess.
💡 What you can learn
- Tana's 3-year stealth build looked like a mistake — it was a distribution strategy.
- By launch, the PKM community had built the anticipation for them.
- The learning curve critics complained about was doing double duty: filtering committed users and generating tutorials.
When they pushed back
After 3 years in the crowded PKM category, Tana pivoted in 2025 to an agentic meeting platform targeting enterprise B2B buyers — repositioning away from individual prosumers.
